About this course

This course is divided into two parts:

Theory exam course (8 weeks)
Oral exam course (4 weeks)

Theory exam course

Week 1
This course kicks off with a full-day online workshop, where you’ll be introduced to our structured learning approach.

Weeks 1–8
You’ll study for roughly one hour per day with:

our Optimised Mining app
physical flashcards and audio notes
practice papers
personalised feedback as you progress.

Oral exam course

Weeks 1–4
You’ll study for roughly one hour per day with:

flash cards
mock orals at times that suit your schedule
personalised feedback to ensure you’re ready for your oral exam.

To take this exam, you need to meet the competencies and work history requirements outlined by Resources Safety & Health Queensland.

Do I need to complete the pre-requisites before I do this course?
We recommend that you complete the pre-requisites and submit your application form by Week 3 of our Open Cut Examiner course to give you time to book your exam with Resources Safety & Health Queensland.

Do I need my Modules (Cert IV Units of Competency) completed first?

Unless you’re approaching completion we recommend completing the modules of your RII40220 – Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) prior to doing our Exam Preparation Course.

Just remember your Cert IV need to meet the required units set by the QLD Board of Examiners found in the application

The exam prep is most effective when commenced as you’ve got everything for your application completed and looking to submit it.

What are the main steps to get my QLD OCE?

Okay in a nutshell:

Application Phase

Do your RII40220 – Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining (Open Cut Examiner) which includes the units outlined in the application. This includes the equipment tickets required.
Complete your RIICOM301E (This can be done as part of the above Cert IV)
Complete your Certificate of Proficiency in Mine Gases and Gas Testing with the QLD Mines Rescue Service (QMRS). You will need to do the Gas Exam during this. You can request access to our Optimised Mining App to help study and smash this exam completely free. Request free access by reaching out to us here.
Complete your RIIENV301E Conduct atmospheric monitoring
Complete your Shotfiring log of 10 blasts. See application for details.
Complete First Aid Units: HLTAID009 and HLTAID011
Complete your Resume showing, in chronological order, where you have worked and what work you performed in each position
Get all documents signed by a Justice of the Peace (JP) or a Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) as being true copies of the originals. Get Statutory Declaration signed.
Complete the Work History document.
Get SSE to fill our and sign Endorsement to sit the exam

Exam Phase
Sit the Written Legislation Exam and pass using our OCE Theory Exam Preparation course
Sit your OCE Oral Exam and pass using our Mock Oral course

How long does it take to get my Written Exam results from the Board of Examiners?

Between 2 – 8 weeks generally (Most cases we see are around 4 weeks)

Do you do Bulk Bookings?

Yes, we can customise a Bulk Booking for large groups to do their Open Cut Examiner Theory and Oral Exams either online or face-to-face.

We can do these in small groups and for organisation-wide scales we can provide live dashboards and regular meetings to help you track progress of your groups.

Is there mutual recognition with New South Wales?

Yes, there is a Mutual Recognition Agreement covering Open Cut Examiner (OCE) with the NSW Open Cut Examiner (Coal Mines other than Underground Mines)
