About this course

This course will prepare you for the QLD Site Senior Executive Exam for Coal Mining (Surface and Underground).

Week 1
This course kicks off with a full-day online workshop, where you’ll be introduced to our structured learning approach.

Weeks 1–8

You’ll study for roughly one hour per day with:

Physical flashcards and audio notes
Practice papers
Personalised feedback as you progress.

To take this exam, you need to have completed:

the RIIRIS601E (G3) and RIIWHS601E (G7)

or:

our nationally accredited Optimised G3 & G7 Combined (QLD)

Do I need to complete the Optimised G3 & G7 before this course?
No – you can start anytime. We recommend having the G3 and G7 completed by Week 5 of our Senior Site Executive course to give you time to book your exam with Resources Safety & Health Queensland.

I have my RIIRIS601E and RIIWHS601E or equivalent already. Do I need to take your Optimised G3 & G7 Combined course?
Nope! If you already have your RIIRIS601E and RIIWHS601E or equivalent competency, you can skip straight to this Senior Site Executive course.

What if my certificates are more than five years old?
If you obtained your certificates more than five years ago, you’ll need a refresher for your exam application, which we can also provide.

FAQ

Do I need my Units of Competency completed first?

You can commence our Exam Preparation course if you haven’t got the required RIIRIS601E and RIIWHS601E units. However, these will need to be completed prior to applying to sit your exam.

We provide both units as a combined course and recommend signing up to commence them prior to your Exam Preparation course with a view to complete it by the half-way mark of the exam preparation at most. This should give you sufficient time to have your application ready and submitted so you can sit your exam right after our Exam Preparation course concludes (the most optimal time to sit).

Do you do Bulk Bookings?

Yes, we can customise a Bulk Booking for large groups to do their Site Senior Executive Notice either online or face-to-face.

Do you provide the Unit of Competency Training too?

Yes, we provide both the RIIRIS601E and RIIWHS601E units as a combined course and recommend signing up to commence them prior to your Exam Preparation course with a view to complete it by the half-way mark of the exam preparation at most. How do I book my exam with the Board of Examiners?

You can book your SSE Coal exam with the RSHQ BOE through the application forms found here. You will need to fill out your application with work history log to prove your experience and supervision in Surface and/or Underground Coal Mining as well as provide the required Units of Competencies. You will also need a Justice of the Peace (JP) or a Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) to sign off on your application and certify the copy of your Units of Competency’s Statement of Attainment.

Is there mutual recognition with Western Australia SSE?

Unfortunately, there isn’t any mutual recognition for this certificate between Western Australia and Queensland at this time.

Is this only coal? Do you provide exam preparation for the Metalliferous SSE (MMQ)?

SSE for Metalliferous / Metal Mines and Quarries have different requirements. They don’t actually have an exam to attain their SSE certification. Instead, you will need to provide the Units of Competency required in the application for the scale of mine you wish to be certified for and your Work History for Surface and/or Underground. There's no Oral Exam for SSE right?

At this stage, the only requirements are:

Units of Competency completed: RIIRIS601E & RIIWHS601E (i.e. G3 & G7)
Work History Completed for Surface or Underground
Submit your Application to sit the exam
Pass the QLD SSE Written Legislation Exam first go with our course!

What are the requirements for the Work History?

You can apply for an SSE Notice / Certificate for either or both Underground Coal Mining and Surface Mining. For any you apply for you will need to provide Work History covering:

Surface Mining Work History:

2 years of supervisory experience: Involvement in the direct supervision of coal mine workers, at a coal mine, that undertake the mining, mechanical, electrical, processing, or safety and health work involved in the extraction of coal, removal of overburden, or exploration at a mine; and
5 years at a coal mine, in operational or technical services activities: This can be mining, mechanical, electrical, processing, or safety and health activities involved in surface coal mining of which at least 2 years have been in a supervisory role.

Underground Mining Work History:

2 years of supervisory experience: Involvement in the direct supervision of coal mine workers, at a coal mine, that undertake the mining, mechanical, electrical, processing, or safety and health work involved in the extraction of coal underground; and
5 years at a coal mine, in operational or technical services activities: This can be mining, mechanical, electrical, processing, or safety and health activities involved in underground coal mining of which at least 2 years have been in a supervisory role.

The work history requires you to provide the dates of work, details of the experience and the details + signature from the SSE (or similar position) to verify your statements.
